Vanilla Almond Milk Steamer

Every night after I put the boys to bed, I sit down on the couch to unwind.  I watch the news or scroll thru Pinterest (ok, scroll thru Pinterest while occasionally glancing at the TV).  Then without fail, my brain tells my stomach that I have to eat something sweet.

You need a bowl of Lucky Charms, my mind tells me.

I try to resist the urge, but then my stomach starts to growl.

You’re starving, my stomach tells me.

I always give in and get up from the couch to grab my sweet treat.  As soon as I gobble it down, I feel guilty.

I’ve been needing to “shed a few pounds” for as long as I can remember.  My sweet tooth has not done me any favors throughout my life.  There’s something about that hour before bed that seems to be the most tempting time of my whole day.  I can do so good and eat healthy all day…until that last hour before I hit the sack.

One of my favorite verses from the Apostle Paul is Romans 7:19, “I want to do what is good, but I don’t.  I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyways.”  I love this verse because it is so true!  I really want to exercise and eat healthy, but I don’t.  I’m glad to know even the Apostle Paul had his struggles!

I need all the help I can get when it comes to fighting off my cravings.  I started to realize that if I drink something hot when I get my nighttime cravings, that it somehow helps me feel satisfied.  I was drinking a cup of tea (caffeine free) with honey every night.  But I began noticing that I would get heartburn not long after…I hate heartburn!  The heartburn would then make me feel like I needed to eat something to get rid of it.  If you give a girl some heartburn, she’ll want a cookie to go with it.  I would be back to the vicious cycle of eating before bed again and always eating empty calories.

I have a feeling I’m not the only one who struggles with nighttime cravings.  If you’re like me and just can’t seem to resist the urge to eat at night, I have the perfect thing to share with you!  It’s called a vanilla steamer and it is the secret to kicking those nighttime sugar cravings.  I drink this almost every night before bed and it leaves me feeling completely satisfied!

I first heard of a vanilla steamer when I came across this pin on Pinterest.  I have adapted it slightly to fit my personal taste.  I like to use unsweetened almond milk because it’s low in calories and I prefer the taste to regular milk.  I also use raw, organic honey and real vanilla extract. For a vegan drink, you could use agave nectar. This hot, creamy drink is less than 100 calories!  That’s way better than my big heaping bowl of Lucky Charms.

Below is the super simple recipe to make a Vanilla Almond Milk Steamer.  I dare you to drink this first the next time you have a nighttime sugar craving.  It may just be the trick to keep you from devouring that entire package of chocolate chip cookies.
